Why #PlasticSucks

#PlasticSucks. It is omnipresent in our surroundings. From bags and disposable containers to water bottles and life-saving medical supplies, plastics offer convenience, affordability, and practicality. However, there is a darker side to their widespread usage.

The hashtag #PlasticSucks aims to raise awareness about the hazards of plastics while proposing a solution focused on tackling the most impactful and easily replaceable plastic items, such as plastic straws. We believe that plastic straws represent a simple product that can be responsibly eliminated and replaced within our lifetime.

These seemingly small items are discarded in the millions each day, littering our environment and posing a threat to numerous animal species and marine life. Surprisingly, over 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds perish annually due to plastic pollution. Viral videos on social media have highlighted the plight of sea turtles with plastic straws stuck in their nostrils, prompting compassionate individuals to consider quitting their use.

When we dispose of the plastics we use, they do not simply disappear. It takes at least 200 years for a plastic straw to break down, but even then, it never truly decomposes—it merely breaks into smaller pieces. Additionally, plastic is toxic.

Plastic straws can leach harmful toxins into our beverages, which ultimately find their way into our bodies’ cells. Studies have revealed that pregnant women carry around 1,500 chemicals in their bodies, with plastics contributing to this chemical burden.

We could delve further into the negative aspects of plastics, but you probably already have a good understanding. However, knowledge alone is insufficient; action must be taken. So, what can you do about it?
